Since yesterday, the mandatory amount of alcohol in brazilian gasoline went up to 27% on all types of gas, save for Podium, which will remain at 25% for the time being. Even though ethanol is cheaper than gas here in Brazil, prices also went up, in yet another attempt at curbing the massive losses following the corruption and bribe schemes at Petrobrás. As if that wasn't bad enough, the government openly admitted they have no fucking idea how harmful the new blend will be to gasoline-only engines, so they recommended that owners of vehicles equipped with such engines switch to the aforementioned Podium gasoline, a fuel grade sold only by Petrobrás and costing over 4.10 reais per LITRE.
Interestingly enough, Hot Rod and its sister publications recently ran an article outlining how ethanol could harm engines not designed for it, with noticeable damage starting at 10% ethanol, and how some states are activelly trying to pass legislation that would force stations to offer at least one type of ethanol free gasoline. Meanwhile in Brazil, we're getting more and more of it forced down our throats, along with price increases, so we can foot the bill of our government's embezzlement. I only hope my Fiat can survive all this shit, because my savings have not.

Ethanol is crap. I mean its good race fuel, but everything else about it is crap. If you can find pure gas, you get huge mileage gains, even over e10. I hate that stuff with the passion of 1000 suns.

but with enough ethanol you can get MAAAAAAAD power due to lower temps so you can push it harder

Shit, I'm so fucked, I'm going to have engine troubles now. How about Shell V-Power+ and the other premium types of gas?

That's just horrible. I already try to stay away from the E10 they sell in Germany in the very rare instance I put gasoline in my car. Gasoline is a bit more expensive than 4.10 reais a liter here, but I guess disposable income is too.

If my engine wasn't running shitty enough...
I straight gave up on gas last month. Thankfully my car is flex and I filled it with our watery Ethanol. It was cheap and it's averaging 5.3km/l instead of 9,4. The price is still just lower than break even point where it's still worth the shitty fuel consumption. Although I'm not sure anymore how my engine will respond to the 27% gas.
Edit: And Petrobrás lowered the prices of gas in Paraguay yet again...

But Brazil. They can grow sugar cane cheaply and using ethanol makes economic sense for them. Producing it from maize or similar doesn't make sense.

It would make sense if taxes weren't that ridiculous.

Exactly, too bad pure gas simply does not exist in Brazil anymore...

Not all of the country produces ethanol, though. Some states, such as the one I live, are too cold and damp to grow sugar, so you need a huge difference in prices to make up for the lower mileage you get from ethanol. Since Petrobrás owns both monopolies in practice, prices are Always too similar to present any kind of noticeable benefit.

Not to mention it's pure gas...

No idea. Do they even consider V-Power+ to be premium? I thought premium fuels were higher octane, everything else was just additives, and V-Power is the same 87 stuff as Shell regular. I could be wrong though.
